Title:

HOLO - 홀로

Description:

Holo –
홀로 is a project merging both visuals and sound to create an audiovisual experience as a fixed media work. Holo is short for hologram, hologram represents a “three-dimensional image generated by interfering beams of light that reflect real, physical objects.” Phonetically holo in English is pronounced to 홀로 in Korean. 홀로 means being alone, by-oneself, and by myself.
Living in two different cultures, I have embodied an identity that is neither Korean nor American. Feeling separated and connected at the same time, I experience the feelings of frustration and aloneness. The purpose of Holo – 홀로 was to create an immersive audiovisual experience that explores those inner-feelings. Holo has double meaning in Korean and in English, to express aloneness but also projecting a three-dimensional image of frustration. The soundscape was produced to encompass those feelings utilizing low frequencies and deep bass-tones. Even though emotions are centered in the brain, strong emotions such as fear and anger flows adrenaline to the heart. So we often feel like our feelings come from our heart. For those reasons, I used a heartbeat pulse to create a rhythm throughout the audio-piece.
Holo – 홀로 contained two different visuals with two screens side-by-side. The left visual was a box containing pulsing graphics, where some of the animation was made to be randomized through audio-reactive elements. The box edge was also audio-reactive to the sound as well and was created to pulse in sync with the visuals on the right screen. The graphics inside the box was created to show imageries of arteries and veins to imitate and bring-out the connection to the heartbeat and inner-feelings. The right visual contained the title and other related messages in both Korean and English. The right typography graphics also was created to have audio-reactive elements. The colors were chosen to represent blood, anger, and frustration. Both visuals were created with TouchDesigner and the sound was produced with Ableton utilizing the Reaktor modular synthesizer.
